The udvartana program at Shri Krishna Matha for this year was conducted today (20.07.2018). Every year on ashada shuddha dashami, the annual maha panchamruta abhisheka is performed for Lord Krishna. Two days prior to this event, on ashtami udvartana takes place. The sanctum sanctorum is washed and kept clean for the mahabhisheka to be performed on dashami.
There is no usage of electrical lamps in the sanctum sanctorum of Shri Krishna Matha. Since the beginning, Lord Krishna is worshiped and viewed with the light emanating from ghee lamps. The sanctum sanctorum is small. Sanctum sanctorums built as per the diktat of shastra are bereft of windows. Thus, the soot emitted by the these lamps that burn everyday gets deposited on the ceiling and walls. The place where Shri Krishna exists is accessible to only His Holiness. This area is washed and maintained by His Holiness himself. The dust and soot which may have remained inside the sanctum sanctorum due to low visibility on the walls is washed and cleaned annually. This is called udvartana. In sanskrit udvartana means to wash and wipe.

The interior of the sanctum sanctorum is cleaned by the seers of the Ashta Mathas. In order to ensure that dust does not fall on little Krishna, he is covered with an armour and then sanctum sanctorum is washed. The exteriors of the sanctum sanctorum is washed by the disciples of His Holiness. Since this opportunity arises once a year, all the seers and disciples carry out this duty with gaiety.
The tirumanjanam carried out at the Tirumala temple is similar to this program.
