Suvarna Gopuara, Soopikavarohana ritual

Suvarna Gopura Project : Soopika Avarohana carried out today

Soopikavarohana, a ritual part of Suvarna Gopura nirmana was conducted today at Shri Krishna Matha.

The most cherished desire of His Holiness Vidyadeesha Teertha to adorn the tower of the shrine of Lord Krishna with gold has been progressing with momentum. Within a few days, the work of covering the tower of Shri Krishna Matha with gold sheets will begin. Before the commencement of this process, the ritual of seeking the permission of the Lord were implemented today.  As a part of this, Shri Narasimha mantra homa, Shri Krishna mantra homa, Shri Vishnu Gayatri mantra homa and Shri Tavtva mantra homa were performed. These rituals were conducted by Chitrapura Gopalakrishnachar, Herga Vedavyasa Bhat, Avadhani Subrahmanya Bhat Gundi Bail and Ramamurthy Bhat.

His Holiness Vidyadeesha Teertha of paryaya Palimaru Matha, the pontiff of Krishnapura Matha His Holiness Vidyasagara Teertha, the pontiff of Kaniyooru Matha His Holiness Vidyavallabha Teertha, the junior seer of Adamaru Matha His Holiness Eeshapriya Teertha, for the smooth functioning of this program, sought the permission of Shri Krishna Mukhyaprana and rendered prayers. Later, krrchcha was conducted, mushti dravya was offered and prasada chaitanya sankocha was performed. The divan of the matha, Vedavyasa Tantri and Parupatyedar Madhusudanacharya were present during the occasion.

After the prayers and Prayaschtita (atonement) rituals were completed, Supikavarohana was performed. In conformance with the traditional procedure, the kalasha at the top of the temple was lifted by a bull and brought down.

What is krrchcha?

While on the path of realization, redressal for mistakes committed knowingly or unknowingly is done through certain vedic remedies called krrchcha. All kinds of atonement are called krrchcha on the whole. Depending upon the severity of the penance, krrchcha’s are accorded specific names. For instance: krrchcha, ati krrchcha, chaandrayana, saantapana, praajaapatya, etc. During this time, homa is performed with the recital of the sacred Pavamana sookta, Narasimha mantra, Vishnu gayatri and other mantras. The deities must be pleased by offering tarpana, etc. Pranastha Shri Narayana who is the indweller of Lord Surya must be contemplated upon. Charity and donations must be offered to the worthy. Finally, prayers must be offered to the Lord through Brahmana santarpane.

Chaitanya sankocha

In order to cover the temple tower with gold sheets, the present roof of the sanctum sanctorum of Lord Krishna must be removed. For this removal, it is inevitable to climb up on the shrine. Before climbing up, the divine energy that is present must be collected in a medium and placed elsewhere till the completion of the work. While the construction work is underway, the matha premises will contain dust and debris. In all such instances, it is an offence to the divine energy present. In order to avoid this, the life force of the deities of the temple are invoked to another place. This is called chaitanya sankocha.

Mushti kaanike

When the tower of a temple is brought down, till such time that it is put back in place, there is a rule that all the people of that town must adhere to the ceremonial rules (vrata niyamagalu) and remain oblate (deekshabaddaru). Failing to do so would become an offence.  Where one is unable to remain oblate owing to inevitable circumstances, atonement procedures must be performed. As the last phase of atonement, a fistful of commodities (mushti dravya) must be offered. In the present times, since not everyone can remain oblate, they may offer mushti dravya to Shri Krishna Matha. A separate hundi has been placed at Shri Matha for this purpose. Those interested may drop their contributions in this in accordance with one’s ability.
